People In Music History
Orff, Carl (1895-1982) German composer, chiefly for the stage; also conductor,
editor of old music, and musical educator. A specially devised educational
range of percussion instruments bears his name, and his own music is also
conspicuous for the use of percussion. His works include the operas The Clever
Girl (Die Kluge), The Moon, Oedipus the Tyrant, Antigone, and others;
incidental music to A Midsummer Night's Dream; scenic choral works, Carmina
Burana, Catulli Carmina (Lat., Songs of Catullus), Trionfo di Afrodite (It.,
Triumph of Aphrodite) The last three are grouped as Trionfi (Triumphs), the
second having an orchestra consisting solely of percussion including 4 pianos.
